Summer: The God of Words Comes Home

I wrote this back at the beginning of June, and here we are, at the end, and I still haven't posted it. It's still relevant. Mercury is about to turn retrograde in Cancer which is much of what this post is about. And Jupiter is about to leave Cancer which is why this retrograde is so significant. So rather than beat myself up and start again (and delay things further) I will share it, and begin another to carry on where this leaves off...

It's been a while since I've sat down to make sense of the sky and I feel a bit out of practice. I'm hoping for some divine inspiration. Since Mercury is our God of thought and communication I will begin with Their* current position above and how that is influencing us down below.

But first, because it shapes everything else I'm going to say.

We are living through a loud time. The outside world is doing what the outside world does when large things are shifting. It is insisting on itself. It's both hard to ignore and difficult to know what to do with.

Astrology has taught me many things but most helpful among them is this: everything happening out there is connected to something happening in here. The Hermetic traditions described it as thus: As above, so below. As within, so without. (Find this in the Kybalion.) This is the architecture underneath everything I'm going to say. And alongside this, every serious tradition agrees on the same quiet insistence: the work of a human life is to become what you actually are. Somewhere underneath the self you perform and the self that formed around other people's needs, that self exists. Jung called the work of finding it individuation. The Sufis spoke of polishing the heart. The Vedic traditions named it moksha. Gurdjieff called it waking up.

Which means that when the world feels turbulent, the most useful question is rarely what is happening. It is: what is this reflecting? Where in me does this have a root? What is being asked for, and why now?

This takes curiosity rather than fear. A willingness to look at yourself without immediately needing to fix what you see. The shadow work traditions, and Jung was the most rigorous cartographer of this territory, suggest that what we cannot see in ourselves tends to appear in our lives as if from outside. The pattern that keeps repeating. The wound that keeps finding new ways to announce itself. When we turn toward it and feel it rather than manage it away, something changes. The outside world doesn't need to be quite so loud. The experience arrives with the same flavour, because the energy is the same, but it comes more softly. You met it. It didn't have to chase you.

I didn't begin with astrology. I began with self-awareness and curiosity and the unglamorous work of sitting with feelings I would rather have not had. When something arose I would work with it, feel it, trace it back. Where had I felt this before? What was the pattern? What was it asking? That process worked. It still works. But it took time. A difficult Mars transit to my Moon, for instance, and I would spend weeks in the investigation before I arrived at what the experience was actually about: the suppressed anger, the turned-inward self-criticism, the absence of boundaries, the slow realisation that the feeling was justified even if I'd never been shown how to express it.

Astrology collapsed that journey. Now when I see a Mars transit to my Moon I know immediately what territory I'm in. The themes are named before the experience has had to make itself loud enough to get my attention. That's what the map does. It doesn't replace the inner work. It tells you where to dig.

The sky right now is asking us to work with something specific. I'll start with Mercury because Their voice is speaking to me the loudest right now.

Mercury

*Why do I refer to Mercury as They?

Mercury is the shapeshifter of the pantheon. Every other God has a fixed nature: Mars is Mars, Saturn is Saturn, their character is not up for negotiation. Mercury alone moves between. Traditional astrology recognised this by assigning Them no fixed gender. Instead, Mercury takes on the quality of whichever sect They find Themselves in. Rise before the Sun and Mercury becomes diurnal, masculine. Appear after the Sun has set and They become nocturnal, feminine. The same God, a different face.

This is why I refer to Mercury as They.

Right now, Mercury is an evening star, visible low in the west after sunset if your horizon is clear enough. We are in the company of Mercury's nocturnal, feminine face. I find that worth knowing, even if I can't always tell you exactly what to do with it.

One small caveat, because precision matters: the sect distinction in traditional texts is usually being applied to a natal chart, to the Mercury you were born under, rather than to Mercury moving through the sky right now. The principle is the same either way. What you are looking at is which side of the Sun Mercury falls on. If Mercury is to the east of the Sun, it sets after the Sun sets and appears in the evening sky. If Mercury is to the west, it rises before the Sun and appears in the morning sky. In a birth chart, you can read this from the degrees: if Mercury's degree is ahead of the Sun in zodiacal order, evening star. Behind the Sun, morning star.

It is also worth noting whether Mercury matches your chart's sect. A daytime birth with a morning star Mercury, or a night birth with an evening star Mercury in these cases Mercury is at home, more comfortable, functioning with less friction. A mismatch is not a disaster, but the God is working slightly against the grain. What holds in either case is that Mercury's nature is not settled. That is the whole point of Them.

Cancer

Mercury moved into Cancer on the 1st of June. The Moon's sign. The watery realm where emotions are close to the surface and the light is always changing because the Moon herself changes, shifting sign every few days, moving from full to dark and back again. Cancer is the edge of the sea. The crab's territory. And the sea is never quite the same twice.

Cancer is the family. The emotional bonds that formed before you had words for them. The body's memory. The place in you that still knows what the kitchen smelled like when you were seven, and exactly what that smell meant about whether it was safe to come downstairs.

Mercury in Cancer brings the mind into that territory. Thought becomes feeling-thought. Communication becomes the attempt to say the things that have only ever lived in the body.

They will be here for a long time. Mercury usually moves through a sign in under a month. But Mercury is preparing to turn retrograde, and so They will stay in Cancer until the 9th of August when They finally move on into Leo. That is ten weeks. Ten weeks of the God of words in the most emotionally saturated sign of the zodiac.

What Jupiter has been doing

To understand why Cancer matters so much right now, you need to know what has been happening there all year.

Jupiter entered Cancer in June of 2025. Cancer is the sign of Jupiter's exaltation, the place where He is most at home, most generous, most able to do what Jupiter does, which is expand and bless and open doors. Jupiter in his exaltation in Cancer has been quietly enlarging whatever Cancer touches in your chart for twelve months. The emotional foundations. The sense of belonging. The family story, for good or ill. The home, the body, the roots.

Jupiter comes to Cancer roughly every twelve years. His last visit was in 2013. Whatever has been growing in your Cancer house since June 2025, it will be another decade before He returns.

And then, on the 9th of June, something significant happens. Jupiter and Venus come together in Cancer. Our two benefics. The planet of expansion and the planet of love, meeting in the sign of emotional depth and memory.

This is the second time they have come together in Cancer during this Jupiter transit. The first was in August 2025, near the very beginning of Jupiter's year in the sign. That conjunction was a beginning. This one is a closing. A last kiss before the story moves on.

Venus and Jupiter together is the sky at its most generous. Love meeting abundance. Warmth meeting grace. Whatever the Cancer house in your chart holds, be it your home, your family, your creative life, your daily work, your partnership, this conjunction lands there as a gift. Feel it. It is not small and it does not come around often.

On the 30th of June, Jupiter leaves Cancer for Leo and does not return for twelve years. The year of expansion in the emotional realm comes to an end.

And on that same day, Mercury stations retrograde.

The handover is ceremonial. Jupiter exits. Mercury turns back. As if Jupiter says: here, I have been busy, things have expanded, been given a higher perspective, things are now ripe for the picking. Now it's time to make sense of the work I've been doing.

The retrograde

Mercury stations retrograde on the 29th of June at 26 degrees of Cancer, turns direct on the 23rd of July at 16 degrees, and finally clears the post-retrograde shadow on the 9th of August.

So for the entirety of July and into August, Mercury is retracing ground in Cancer. Going back. Looking again. The God of the mind, moving through the house of memory and feeling, asked to slow down and return.

We are already in the pre-shadow from the 13th of June. You may already feel it. Conversations that circle back, thoughts that don't quite resolve, something from the past surfacing that you thought you'd left alone.

Retrograde periods are the sky asking you to do the slower work. Integration rather than forward motion. A clearer reading of what was always there, rather than new information on top of old.

In Cancer, that slower work is emotional. It is the thought you never finished. The thing you couldn't say to your mother. The pattern you have lived in so long it stopped looking like a pattern. Mercury retrograde in Cancer is asking: what has only ever been feeling, that is waiting to become words?

The Cancer house in your chart is where to look. That is where this revision is happening. That is the territory being asked to yield something it has been holding.

The Sun follows Mercury in

The Sun moves into Cancer in the third week of June, joining Mercury in the Moon's sign. For the weeks that follow, identity and mind are both operating in the emotional realm. This is not a time that rewards pure rationality. The thinking that will serve you now is the kind that knows how to feel its way forward.

What is coming at the end

On the 28th of August, there is a partial solar eclipse in Virgo.

Eclipses are threshold moments. They close one chapter and open another. This one falls in Virgo, the sign of daily practice, of the body, of the work that is done quietly and with care. And at the moment of that eclipse, Mercury is cazimi. In the heart of the Sun. The one position where proximity to the Sun, rather than overwhelming the planet, illuminates it entirely. Mercury cazimi is a moment of exceptional clarity. Something is seen whole, in words, that could not be seen before.

And Mercury cazimi is exactly square Uranus in Gemini. Uranus in Mercury's own sign, sending a jolt of electricity across to the messenger at the moment of Their greatest clarity. Whatever arrives at that eclipse will not be what you expected. Uranus does not deal in comfortable revelations. It deals in the ones that change the shape of things.

The eclipse is the culmination. Everything that Mercury has been moving through in Cancer, all that slow interior work, all that feeling-toward-language, the looking back, arrives at the Virgo eclipse as something clear. Something that lands in the body. Something that changes, quietly and irrevocably, how you move through the ordinary days that follow.

What this might feel like for you

If you have Cancer prominent in your chart - Cancer rising, Cancer sun, the Moon in Cancer, or significant planets in Cancer - this season is particularly loud for you. But everyone has Cancer somewhere, and that somewhere is where to look.

You might find yourself thinking more about your family of origin than usual. Old memories surfacing without apparent reason. A need to go home, literally or in some interior sense. Conversations that want to happen with people you have been avoiding. A heaviness in the chest that turns out, on inspection, to have a shape and a history.

You might find that the words for something finally start to come. That you can say something now that you could not say six months ago. The writing that was stuck begins to move. The conversation you have been circling for years becomes possible.

You might find yourself reviewing something you thought was finished. A decision revisited, a relationship reassessed, a story about yourself you have been carrying for decades that turns out, in the Mercury retrograde light, to look rather different than it did.

This is not disruption. This is the work. The sky is not doing something to you. It is showing you where, in the Cancer area of your life, something wants to be seen more clearly than it has been.

The Jupiter-Venus conjunction in the first week of June is the warmth available to you as you begin. Receive it.

The retrograde through July is the interior passage. Stay with it.

The August eclipse is the arrival. Trust what comes.
