When my daughter was small, we read together every night, and the Snail and the Whale were frequent companions on her journey from awake, to asleep. We read it so often that both of us could recite it word for word...
'The Snail and the Whale' is a 2003 children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The story follows a sea snail who longs to see the world and hitches a ride on the tail of a humpback whale. Together, they embark on a journey across the ocean, encountering various creatures and sights along the way. However, when the whale becomes beached in a bay, it’s up to the tiny snail to save the day.
What does this have to do with astrology?
Stories, in whatever form (myths, fairy tales, children's books...), serve as mirrors reflecting elements of the human experience. They provide narratives that we can relate to, offering lessons, insights, and a shared understanding of the world. This is also the case with the archetypal motifs and symbols found in astrology.
Archetypal Journeys: The journey of the Snail and the Whale in the story is an archetypal one, a common motif in many myths and narratives. Astrology offers a framework and a map for the archetypal journey's (the cycles we loop through) as we walk the path of our lives. The archetypal symbolism provides a backdrop upon which we can understand our experiences, and apply that understanding to enable our personal growth and transformation.
Individual Pathways: Each character in a story, like each individual in astrology, has a unique path and purpose. The Snail and the Whale each embark on an adventure that is distinctly their own, just as individuals navigate their lives as described in the map dictated by their birth chart.
Facing Challenges: In 'The Snail and the Whale', the characters encounter challenges during their journey. Similarly, astrology acknowledges that life is filled with ups and downs, dark and light, symbolised by the positions of the Gods and the nature of the Gods themselves. The challenges faced by the characters in the story and those reflected in astrological charts, remind us that difficulties are a natural, and essential, part of our personal narratives. Without the challenge we wouldn't be able to change and grow.
Learning and Growth: Adventures in stories often involve learning and growth, and astrology mirrors this concept by emphasising personal development. The characters in a story evolve through their experiences, just as individuals grow and learn through the challenges and opportunities presented by their astrological configurations.
Universal Themes: Both stories and astrology tap into universal themes and archetypes that resonate across cultures and time periods. The journey of self-discovery, the pursuit of dreams, and the understanding of one's place in the world are themes that transcend individual stories and astrological charts.
Narrative as a Tool for Understanding: Stories provide a narrative structure that helps us make sense of our experiences. Astrology, with its symbols and archetypes, similarly offers a narrative framework for understanding the patterns and themes in our lives. Both can be seen as tools for making meaning out of our individual and collective journeys.
In summary, stories like 'The Snail and the Whale' offer us a reflection of our own experiences, providing a narrative through which we can understand and relate to the complexities of life. Similarly, astrology offers a symbolic framework that helps us interpret our unique journeys, connecting us to the broader tapestry of human experience. Both storytelling and astrology share a common thread in their ability to illuminate, inspire, and guide us on our individual quests for meaning and understanding.
Astrology can help change how we see ourselves and our experiences, and can help us to understand others.
What is Sagittarius Season?
In the vast tapestry of the cosmos, The Sun takes its annual journey through the zodiac, casting its radiant light on the various facets of our lives. As The Sun forges His brilliance through each zodiac sign, our life journey reflects the themes and characteristics that The Sun in each sign represents, providing a lens through which we perceive the world.
As we enter Sagittarius season, the cosmic stage is set for a dynamic and adventurous period. Governed by the benevolent planet Jupiter, Sagittarius embodies the spirit of exploration, knowledge, and expansion. In the Hellenistic tradition, The Sun's journey through Sagittarius from late November to mid-December marks a time when the celestial energies align with the ideals of this fire sign. Sagittarius, the Archer, symbolizes the perpetual seeker, aiming its arrow toward the vast horizons of intellectual and experiential discovery.
During Sagittarius season, The Sun finds its fiery domicile in this adventurous sign, amplifying qualities associated with optimism, enthusiasm, and a hunger for higher truths. As The Sun traverses this expansive territory, it encourages us to embark on intellectual journeys, embrace new perspectives, and seek wisdom that broadens our understanding of the world. The cosmic energies prompt us to venture beyond our comfort zones, engaging in activities that stimulate personal growth and awareness.
This is a time to tap into the Archer's bold spirit, exploring uncharted territories of the mind and spirit. Whether it's through travel, education, or philosophical contemplation, Sagittarius season beckons us to set our sights on the horizon, reminding us that the journey itself holds profound lessons and transformations. We are invited to expand our consciousness and embark on a quest for knowledge that aligns with the highest universal truth and wisdom.
How does 'The Snail and the Whale' help us understand Sagittarius season, and how we're being given the opportunity by the current cosmic tone, to work consciously to transform into our best selves?
The Snail and the Whale: The Journey
'The Snail and the Whale' captures the essence of an extraordinary journey, both outward and inward. As we delve into the cosmic symbolism of Jupiter and the sign of Sagittarius in astrology, we find parallels between the Snail's grand adventure and the transformative journeys of consciousness that each of us embarks upon throughout our life's journey's.
The story unfolds with a tiny Snail, with an 'itchy foot', who, unlike the rest of the flock, yearns for adventure beyond the limitations of her tiny world. 'The sea is deep and the world is wide' and the tiny Snail longs to explore it. The Snail embodies the Sagittarian spirit: she is an adventurer who longs for freedom from the confines of her situation. She's hit with (divine, Jupiterian?) inspiration and writes in a 'silvery trail',
Teaming up with a kind-hearted, benevolent Whale who invites her to sail with him, they set off on an epic voyage, 'to towering icebergs and far off lands, with fiery mountains and golden sands'. This desire to adventure and explore the unknown beyond, is symbolised in astrology by the expansive, adventurous, freedom seeking nature of Sagittarius, ruled by the mighty Jupiter. Just as the Snail gazes, amazed and in awe at the vastness of 'the sky, sea, the land. The waves and the caves and the golden sand', we too can embark on a quest to explore and in doing so expand our awareness beyond the confines of our every day and our current level of consciousness.
No journey worth taking is without challenge,
“The key to life is accepting challenges. Once someone stops doing this, he's dead.”
― Bette Davis
and the Snail and the Whale's journey is no exception. There 'came the day, the Whale lost his way' and swum 'too close to the shore' as the tide slipped away, leaving 'the whale... beached in a bay'. Just as the Whale found himself beached in a perilous situation, we, too, will encounter unresolved issues and daunting challenges on our adventures.
Here's how the Sagittarian spirit might be utilised to help us see the bigger picture and tap into our inner knowing during challenging times:
Optimism and Positivity: Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and both are associated with optimism, enthusiasm, and a positive outlook on life. When facing challenges, individuals with a strong Sagittarius or Jupiter influence in their charts may naturally approach difficulties with a hopeful attitude, believing in their ability to overcome obstacles.
Broad Perspective: Sagittarius is linked to the concept of expansion and a broad perspective. People with a significant Sagittarian influence might be more inclined to see challenges as opportunities for personal growth and learning. They may naturally look beyond the immediate struggle and focus on the broader picture, understanding that challenges are part of a larger journey.
Inner Knowing and Intuition: Astrology often involves a connection to one's inner self and intuition. Individuals with a strong Sagittarius or Jupiter influence may find that tapping into their inner knowing helps them navigate challenges. Trusting in their instincts and having faith in the journey can provide a source of strength and resilience.
Faith and Inspiration: Jupiter is associated with faith and inspiration. During challenging times, individuals influenced by Sagittarius or Jupiter may find strength in their beliefs and a sense of purpose. Whether through religious or spiritual practices or a philosophical outlook, having a source of inspiration can be a powerful motivator.
Adaptability: Sagittarius is a mutable sign, suggesting adaptability and a willingness to go with the flow. When facing challenges, those with a strong Sagittarian influence might find it easier to adapt to changing circumstances and find alternative solutions. This adaptability contributes to resilience in the face of adversity.
How did the Snail foster her Sagittarian spirit to rise to the challenge she faced?
Though she 'felt helpless and terribly small' she once again was struck by (divine, Jupiterian?) inspiration and crawled into the school to leave another message with her 'silvery trail', this time saying,
And with her message the Snail saved the day, by sending the children, who went running from school, to fetch the fireman and dig a pool, to keep the Whale cool till the tide came into the bay, and allowed the Whale and the Snail to travel safely away. "Hooray!"
What of adventure?
The thirst for adventure, whether that's expressed outwardly into the world, or into the vastness of our unknown inner territory, like the Snail's itch to explore, is inherent in all of us whether we are consciously aware of it or not. We might relate more to the flock that are satisfied with the smooth black rock, but in Sagittarius season this thirst to explore and expand will grab us, whether we choose to embrace it consciously, or not.
Astrology teaches us that we carry the cosmos within ourselves; we are the microcosm of the macrocosm. We have the entire Universe within us, as demonstrated by the fact that we are made up of all the signs of the zodiac and all the Gods in the sky. Jupiter is the divine aspect of our selves that is focused on a higher truth, and the big picture perspective gained through learning and expanding our knowledge, mirroring the Snail's pull towards adventure. We are at once, the flock that are resistant to change, the Snail who is driven to expand and the Whale (Jupiter) as the aspect that can lead us into that expansion.
Just as the Whale found itself beached in a perilous situation and the Snail was given the difficult task of resolving that situation, we too will encounter unresolved issues and daunting challenges. However, the story reminds us that, like the Snail and the Whale, we have the capacity to overcome adversity, learn from our experiences, and emerge stronger...
The Snail and the Whale went back to the dock and the flock on the rock, who said, 'haven't you grown!'
And the Whale and the Snail
Told their wonderful tale.
Of shimmering ice and coral caves,
And shooting stars and enormous waves.
And of how the Snail, so small and frail,
With her looping, curling, silvery trail,
Saved the life of the humpback Whale.
Inspiring Snail, after Snail, after Snail, after Snail to crawl onto the tail of the humpback Whale and begin their own unique journey of adventure and growth by venturing into their unknown territories (both inner and outer).
'The Snail and the Whale' invites us to recognize that our inner and outer world's are as vast and awe-inspiring as the cosmos. By embracing the transformative power of adventures, we can navigate the storms within and without, discover hidden realms, and, like the snail returning to the flock on the rock, share the stories of our personal evolution with the world. As we journey, we uncover the truth that we are, indeed, the great unknown waiting to be explored.
What can embracing the spirit of the Sagittarius do for us?
Fostering the Sagittarian spirit of freedom, questing, and adventuring can have positive effects on personal growth and transformation. Sagittarius is associated with qualities such as exploration, expansion, and a love for knowledge and adventure. Here's how embracing these qualities can support personal transformation:
Broadening Perspectives:
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth. Embracing the Sagittarian spirit encourages you to explore different perspectives, cultures, and ideas. This broadens your understanding of the world and helps you develop a more open-minded and inclusive mindset.
Freedom and Independence:
The Sagittarian spirit values freedom and independence. Engaging in activities that allow you to break free from limitations or restrictive patterns can empower you to discover your true self. This pursuit of freedom can lead to personal liberation and self-discovery.
Quest for Knowledge:
Sagittarius is associated with the love of learning and a quest for knowledge. Embracing this spirit encourages continuous learning and intellectual growth. Pursuing education, whether formal or informal, can lead to personal development and the acquisition of valuable skills.
Adventuring and Risk-Taking:
Taking calculated risks and embracing challenges is a fundamental aspect of the Sagittarian spirit. Stepping out of your comfort zone, facing uncertainties, and embracing adventure can help you overcome fears, build resilience, and develop a more courageous and confident mindset.
Transformative Experiences:
The questing nature of Sagittarius often involves seeking transformative experiences. Engaging in activities that push your boundaries and challenge your preconceptions can lead to personal growth and transformation. These experiences may include travel, trying new things, or taking on new responsibilities.
Spiritual Exploration:
Sagittarius is often associated with spirituality and the search for meaning. Fostering the Sagittarian spirit may involve exploring your spiritual beliefs, practices, and understanding your place in the universe. This spiritual quest can lead to inner transformation and a deeper connection with yourself and the world.
Why should we transform?
It should be noted that we do not have to change ourselves. We are perfect and deserving of everything that life has to offer exactly as we are. We are exactly where we should be. The first step in any journey of transformation is to be where we are and accept where we are - we can't begin to change until we know what it is about ourselves that is currently limiting us or holding us back. To let go and make way for the new, first we need to know what we want to let go of.
That said, while transformation is a natural and ongoing process in life, here are some reasons why conscious and intentional personal transformation is valuable:
Adaptation to Change:
Life is dynamic and constantly changing. Transforming allows you to adapt to new circumstances, challenges, and opportunities more effectively.
Self-Discovery and Fulfilment:
Personal transformation often involves self-discovery, understanding your values, passions, and purpose. This self-awareness contributes to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
Resilience and Coping Skills:
Transformation can enhance your ability to cope with challenges and setbacks. Developing resilience is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.
Improved Relationships:
Personal growth often positively impacts your relationships. As you transform, you may develop better communication skills, empathy, and a deeper understanding of others.
Continuous Learning:
Life is a journey of learning and growth. Embracing transformation keeps you engaged in the process of continuous learning, contributing to a more enriched and dynamic life.
Alignment with Authentic Self:
Transformation allows you to align more closely with your authentic self. Living authentically brings a sense of fulfilment and inner harmony.
In summary, fostering the Sagittarian spirit supports personal transformation by encouraging exploration, freedom, and a quest for knowledge and adventure. Personal transformation, in turn, is valuable for adapting to life's changes, discovering one's authentic self, and leading a more fulfilling and resilient life.
